Winfred Wimp Jelden, 86, of Mitchell, died August 14, at the Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday at the Northridge Baptist Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Wednesday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Winfred was born on July 10, 1918 at Bessie, Oklahoma to Gerhard and Margaret (Bornschlegel) Jelden. He moved as a young child with his mother to Omaha and a few years later to Emery. He moved to California in the late thirties and eventually moved back and married Evelyn Hanssen on September 26, 1940. He served in the US Army during World War II, was discharged in 1946 and he and Evelyn moved to Mitchell. Wimp worked on a local farm and owned and operated Westside Implement. In the early 50s, he began a long career as a Fireman and Engineer on the Milwaukee Railroad and remained in Mitchell after his retirement. He loved to hunt, fish, and was a collector of antique cars. He is survived by two sons, Doug (Nykole) Jelden, Phoenix, AZ, and Jim (Beth) Jelden, Mitchell and a sister, Eunice Janssen, Emery, SD. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents. A memorial fund has been established in his name at the First National Bank of South Dakota.
