William 'Buck' Milton Timmins III of Mitchell, SD passed away at home due to complications of Covid-19 Monday, November 16, 2020. Because of the Covid 19 restrictions, a private graveside was held on Friday, November 20 in Graceland Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held in the future, when it is safe.
William "Buck" Milton Timmins III was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Mitchell, SD on June 28, 1948 to William M and Alice M Timmins. He attended Litchfield Grade School and graduated from Mitchell High in 1966. He graduated with a BS from DWU in 1971.
He was united in marriage with Nanci Brodeen on May 29, 1976 in Avon SD. They made their home first in Avon, and moved to Mitchell in 1978, where they raised two children, Will and Nick.
Anyone who knew Buck, knew that he loved his sports-but he loved his family more. He loved raising his boys, following their activities,and staying involved with whatever they were doing. He was very proud of them. His grandchildren were the light of his life. His greatest delight was spending time with them, reading with them, wrestling with them, and, of course, following their sports activities.
Buck began his teaching and coaching career at Avon High School in 1971. He coached football, basketball, and track there for 7 years. He then went to Parkston High School for 29 years. In Parkston, he was an instructor and coached basketball and track. He started the cross-country program in Parkston during the fall of 1985. He received a number of SDCCTA Region Track and Field and Cross-Country Coach of the Year awards while in Parkston. Buck was very active in the South Dakota State Amateur Baseball Tournament when it was hosted in Mitchell.
Buck began his officiating career in 1974. He officiated high school and college football and basketball contests for 35 years, including a number of state championship football and basketball games. He received many awards during this time, both State and National, for his officiating These included the Doug Koster Memorial Award in 1998, the Steve Withorne Memorial Award in 2010, and the SD High School Activity Association's Distinguished Service Award in 2011.
His passion was education and athletics. He loved teaching at the high school level, and later, teaching officials. He was the 'go-to guy' for any football, basketball, or track rules question. He was a regular presence at both the local and surrounding area high school and college sports events. Since his retirement, he was the SDHSAA Statewide Supervisor of High School Football officials.
Buck is survived by his wife, Nanci, sons Will, Minneapolis, and Nick, Mitchell, and his beloved grandchildren, Stella, and Jack; siblings, Mary (Robert) Wilson, Omaha, NE and Terry (Judy) Timmins, Mitchell, SD; sister and brother in laws Pam and Grant Uecker, Mitchell; Leslie and Vincent Bruzzese, Staten Island, NY; Rick and Renee Brodeen, Las Vegas, NV; Peg and Mark Hartung, Dallas, TX; Barb and Randy Lutmer, Louisville, KY; Cathy Brodeen,Avon; Cynthia and Brook McBride, Seattle WA and an abundance of well-loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Bill" and Alice Timmins; his in-laws Clair and Jocelyn Brodeen, Brother-in Law, Jackson Brodeen, and Great Nephew Peyton Sears.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to LifeQuest or the Abbott House.
