Obituary

William "Bill" Schamber, age 91 of Mitchell, SD died Sunday, November 8, 2015 at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, November 13, 2015 at Zion Lutheran Church with burial at Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Bill Schamber, son of Jacob and Matilda (Kahler) Schamber, was born in Gregory County, SD on the family farm. He moved with his family to Mellette County where Bill attended country school and confirmation school. After his schooling, Bill helped on the family farm and later entered the US Navy on December of 1944 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on July of 1946 and returned to the family farm near Burke, SD. Bill was united in marriage with Leila Steppat on September 7, 1952 in Burke, SD. The couple made their home in Mitchell, Sioux City, IA and White Lake for a short time. They then farmed and ran a dairy farm near Plankinton for 30 years. They sold the farm in the late 1970's and moved to Mitchell, SD. While in Mitchell, Bill was employed as a postal truck driver for a number of years before retiring. Bill enjoyed family reunions, dancing, sitting on the deck, wood working, and volunteering at the Corn Palace. He will be remembered as a "handy man" who could fix anything. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell, the VFW and the American Legion. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 63 years, Leila Schamber, Mitchell, SD; four children, DeeDee (Glenn) Mayer, Chamberlain, SD, Marty (Jackie) Schamber, St. Louis, MO, Steve (Carrie) Schamber, Colorado Springs, CO, Vic (Myrna) Schamber, Spearfish, SD, nine grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; two sisters, Igena Johnston, Mitchell, SD, Louise Hyatt, Memphis, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Albert, Edwin "Spud", Art; five sisters, Edna, Hilda, Esther, Alvina and Leona.
