Obituary

Wilbur T. Baldwin Sr, age 77, of Mitchell, died November 16, 2004, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Friday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 6 PM. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Wilbur T. Baldwin Sr, was born May 29, 1927, in Hanson County to Jess and Kathryn (Kopfmann) Baldwin and moved with his parents to a farm near Mitchell where he attended country school. He later attended Mt. Vernon High School. He was united in marriage with Alberta Weins on August 26, 1946. He worked at several places in Mitchell and in September, 1962, he joined the Mitchell Police Department and worked as a juvenile officer. He was a Police Captain and a member of the child abuse team. He retired from the Mitchell Police Department in 1984, and worked as a member of the volunteer fire department where he received an honorary badge. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the South Dakota Peace Officers Association. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife and five sons: Douglas and wife, Teri, of Deadwood, SD; Gary and wife, Heidi, of Casper, WY; Wilbur, Jr., of Broken Bow, NE; Brian and wife, Heidi, of Mitchell, SD; Mark and wife, Tonia of Clarinda, IA; a foster son, Rick Wittenhagen, eighteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren; three brothers, Harvey and wife, Deanna, Sioux Falls, SD; Homer and wife, Dorine, Omaha, NE; Kenneth and wife, Gladys, and a sister, Lelah Annis, all of Mitchell, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Curtis and a sister, Helen Blindauer.
