Wanita Nagel, age 86, of Mitchell, SD, died Thursday March 19, 2009 after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 :00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Will Funeral Chapel.
Wanita Nagel was born August 6, 1922, in Sioux City, IA, to Orlo and Edna (Lamster) Halstead, she graduated from Brookings Agriculture High School. She was united in marriage with Owen V. Nagel on June 6, 1940 in Ivanhoe, MN. The couple farmed in the Brookings area. They later lived in Artesian and then Mitchell where Wanita and Owen remodeled houses and traveled nationally as catastrophe insurance adjusters. They visited 47 states during their more than forty years adjusting catastrophes caused by hail storms, tornados, and hurricanes. A businesswoman, she managed rental properties in Mitchell until her death.
Wanita loved working in her yard and garden (winning Yard of the Month twice), creating ceramic masterpieces, (receiving many state and regional prizes including Best of Show), traveling (England, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico, Alaska, and Canada), and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie (Donald) Messer, Centennial, CO; two sons, Mark Nagel, Mitchell, SD, Alan (Debra) Nagel, Edmond, OK; six grandchildren, Christine (Gordon) Gallagher, Kent (Katherine Hackett) Messer, Rick (Kandi) Nagel, Brad (Morgan Rabatine) Nagel, Tiffany (Michael) DAmours and Jason Nagel; seven great grandchildren, Rachel, Noah and Gabriel Gallagher, Decklin Nagel, Madeline and Eleanor Messer, and Aiden DAmours; three sisters, Genevieve Simmons, White, SD, Garnet Brush, Tucson, AZ and LaVonne Aslesen, Sioux Falls, SD; one brother, Orville Halstead, Whiting, IA.
Wanita is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Owen on June 7, 1999; a son, Ronald; and a sister, June Sorbel.
Wanita was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell for over fifty years. Memorials are directed to the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell or a special scholarship fund at Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell, SD.
