Walter Grasser, 98, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Firesteel Healthcare in Mitchell, SD.

A memorial service for Walt will be held at Will Funeral Home at 10 AM on Saturday, September 9th.  All friends and family are welcome.

In 1941 Walter H. Grasser enlisted in the United States Navy as part of our country's Greatest Generation who eagerly went forth to defend our nation in World War II.  He was 17 years old.  He served on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific, and was engaged in the historic Battle of the Coral Sea.  After his military service, God's providence brought Walt to South Dakota, and in 1954 he met Leslie Taylor Livingston.  They were both in need of a new start, which God provided to them through their union.  They were together for 37 years until Leslie passed away in 1991.

In 1963, a miraculous event happened to Walt.  He was struggling with the weight of the condition of his soul and the bondage of sin in his life. Seemingly out of nowhere, he encountered the Lord Jesus Christ in a mighty and powerful way.  He cried out and said, "Jesus save me!"  At that moment, he was delivered and filled with the Holy Spirit of God.

Ever since that day, and especially after his wife Leslie passed away, his desire has been to share the love of Jesus with all whom he encountered.

God gave Walt the gift of playing the harmonica, and he shared this gift through worship and outreach.  His desire was to always to "show forth the Rock of Ages", honoring God in the hymns he played

We, his family, want to thank all of the people of Mitchell, South Dakota where Walt lived for 70 years, and in particular all of the members of Cornerstone Baptist Church who enfolded him.  We give a special thanks to Ted and Linda Christianson, who loved Walt dearly and cared for him so much.
