Virginia Koehler, age 88, of Mitchell, died May 14, 2007 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Wednesday with a 7 PM prayer service at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Virginia was born on December 13, 1918 at McCallsburg, Iowa to Jesse and Katie (Johnson) Thompson. She grew up in McCallsburg and graduated from High School there. She graduated from Iowa State College in Ames, IA in 1940 with a degree in household equipment. She became a Home Service Representative at NorthWestern Public Service in Mitchell, SD. In 1942 she moved to San Diego, CA and was employed with the Corp of Engineers and worked at the Marine Base in bookkeeping, filing and as a cashier. Virginia was united in marriage with B. Wayne Koehler on September 28, 1944, at LaJolla, California. Wayne continued with his service obligations. They moved to Plankinton, SD after Waynes discharge in 1946. They moved to White Lake and Lake Andes and then returned to Mitchell in 1956. She raised their children and then worked as a bookkeeper in Mitchell. She enjoyed playing cards and bridge, and in earlier years bowling. She continued to play cards until her death. She especially enjoyed family activities. Survivors include her children: Vicki Koehler, Bethel, Alaska, Deb Toomey (Jerry), Mitchell, Bill Koehler (Janice) Watertown, SD, Jim Koehler (Jacki) Aberdeen, SD and Jean Koehler, Mitchell; brothers, Jim Thompson, Ames, Iowa and Wright Thompson (Jean) Buffalo Center, Iowa; twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne on Dec. 27, 1990; her parents, four brothers, Everett, Lester, Audrey, Harlan; one sister, Gertrude Thompson and a son-in-law, Peter Platten. A memorial fund has been established in Virginias name which will benefit children.
