Obituary

Virgil Kistler, 87, of Mitchell, died September 10 at the Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Monday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:30 PM. Virgil was born on December 18, 1916 on a farm in Davison County to Oliver and Blanche (Adair) Kistler. He grew up on the family farm and at the age of three suffered a severe sunstroke while his family was haying. This caused developmental disabilities for Virgil. His communication was mostly affected. Virgil attended school long enough to learn to read, write, and spell during the 1920s. He used his spelling ability to communicate with others throughout his life. Virgil spent 42 years working for Forrest Bing Gaetze as an assistant at Barneys Market. Virgil moved to an adult foster care providers home after his mother moved to a nursing home. He later received residential services from the MAATC and eventually got his own apartment at Meadowlawn Plaza. He retired from Barneys Market in 1992. The MAATC was able to assist Virgil in visiting his sister, Mae, in Ohio a few times. After her death, he considered the MAATC staff as his family. One of the best memories he had was getting to see Bob Barker and the Price is Right show in October, 1997. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father in 1949, his mother in 1977, two sisters and three brothers.
