Virgie Ebel Montgomery, age 92, of Mitchell, died May 18, 2006 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, May 23 at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Monday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Virgie was born in Hartford, SD on January 5, 1914 to Eddie J. and Ida Belle (Preston) Applegate. She attended school in Salem and in 1929, moved to Mitchell where she attended Mitchell High School. She attended the Lang School of Cosmetology in Mitchell. Virgie married Ted Ebel on June 13, 1937 in Mitchell. They made their home in Mitchell and she was part owner of Ebel Vanity Beauty Shop. Together they had three children. Ted died on June 1, 1975. On December 17, 1983, she married Ray Montgomery in Mitchell. They continued living in Mitchell where she was involved in several community activities. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She also served as President and Secretary of United Methodist Women, and was chairman, secretary and treasurer of her circle and local church activities chairman. Virgie served as Secretary of the Longfellow PTA, Secretary of the Methodist Hospital Auxiliary and served as a Gray Lady. She was a member of Ladies of Moose Lodge. She is survived by her children: Ted Ebel and wife, Karen Rau Ebel, Rociada, New Mexico, Sandra Ebel Butler and husband, John, Cinnaminson, New Jersey and Peggy Ebel Larson, Mitchell; two step-daughters, Kay Montgomery Bailey and husband, Richard, Mitchell, and Donna Montgomery Moran and husband, Jim, Woonsocket; eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, four step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both husbands, six sisters and three brothers, an infant grandson, Clay Matthews and a granddaughter, Randee (Ebel) Brown.
