Violet Mae Freidel, age 89, of Ethan, SD died Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Avera Bormann Manor. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Saturday, April 28, 2018 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Dimock, SD with burial at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Ethan, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, April 27, 2018 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Dimock with a rosary followed by a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.
Violet Schumacher, daughter of William and Elsie (Pueppke) Schumacher, was born on January 2, 1929 in Neligh, NE. She attended country school through the eighth grade and Mitchell High School. She was united in marriage with Francis C. Freidel on November 29, 1950 in Ethan, SD. They farmed southeast of Ethan. Francis passed away in September 1992 and she continued to live on the farm. In 2013 she moved to Parkston Heritage Apartments in 2014 she moved to Avera Bormann Manor.
Violet worked as a waitress at the Oriental Café in Mitchell while in high school during the 1940's. While married to Francis she helped out in the fields, raised a big garden canning many quarts of fruits and vegetables, raised chickens and geese, and sewed and patched clothing for her family. She sold Blair Products to the neighbor ladies. During the 1970's Violet was a nurse's aide for the Good Samaritan Country Center seventeen miles northeast of Parkston and Good Samaritan Center in Parkston. She enjoyed polka music, Lawrence Welk, reading, game shows, playing cards, word search puzzles, listening to Corn Palace basketball games and baking cookies for the grandkids. Her eyes would "light up" when her grandchildren came to visit.
Grateful for having shared her life are her three daughters, Linda (Chuck) Evans, Mt. Clemens, MI, Mary Petrik, Ethan, SD, Therese (Dan) Ware, Mitchell, SD; two sons, James (Barbara) Freidel, Parkston, SD, Thomas A. (Elaine) Freidel, Ethan, SD; a sister-in-law, Marian Prickett, Mitchell, SD; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren and two step great great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis; a son, John; two sisters, Lois (John) Wermers and Donna (Leo) Zimmerman.
