Viola Murtha age 92, of Mitchell, SD died Thursday at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Saturday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a rosary service beginning at 7:00 PM.

Viola Berg, daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Elsen) Berg, was born May 3, 1916 in LeMars, IA. When she was three weeks old, Viola moved with her family to Parkston, SD and then to Milltown, SD where she attended country school.

Viola was united in marriage with Joseph Murtha on February 26, 1946 in Parkston, SD. She worked at home and took care of others. Viola was employed for a short time at a café. The couple lived on a farm near Parkston before moved to a farm near Artesian, SD in 1955. The couple continued to farm near Artesian until the retired to Mitchell in 2006.

She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Viola enjoyed gardening, dancing and in earlier years roller skating.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Joseph Murtha, Mitchell, SD; a son, James (Donna) Murtha, Mitchell, SD; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; two brothers, Cornelius (Mary Jane) Berg, Parkston, SD, William Berg, Leeds, ND; three sisters, Nathalene Remper, Bridgewater, SD, LaVonne (Marlin) Mueller, Elko, NV, Mary Jane Stock, Pierce, CO; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Sylvester, Donald, Raymond and Elmer; three sisters, Darlene Berg, Florence Larson and Eleanor Hohn.
