Viola M. (Jarding) Fluegel was born on February 18, 1927 in Alexandria, SD to Lawrence and Anna (Schroeder) Jarding.  She grew up on a farm west of Alexandria, with a brother and sister.   She attended grade school at a rural school and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1945.  Vi enrolled at the Notre Dame Jr. College and taught in a rural school near Alexandria for three years.

On June 14, 1948, Vi married John C. Fluegel of Salem, SD at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria, SD.  They moved to Huron, SD where she taught another year. They welcomed a daughter, Jacque before returning to Alexandria, and was a stay-at-home Mom to raise their three children, as Steve and Kathy joined the family.

She was an active member of St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church where she taught religion classes and served on various committees in the Sacred Heart League, and Catholic Order of Foresters.  She was employed at the St. Joe Hospital in Mitchell as a secretary for the Personnel and Nursing Service combined office before they moved to Ohio in 1973, so her husband, John could continue employment at Ross Laboratories, as the plant in Mitchell was closing.  After the move, Vi was employed at the Westerville City Schools until she retired in July, 1989.  She then volunteered at St. Ann's Hospital and enjoyed meeting many new friends for another 16 years.

She and her husband loved to dance, skate, socialize with friends, and travel….especially to visit their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, which were always the most enjoyable times. They returned to South Dakota in October of 2015 and made their residence in Mitchell.  They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in June of 2020.

Vi is survived by her children, Jacque (Donald) Flattem of Davenport, IA, Steve (Nancy) Fluegel of Highland Village, TX, and Kathy Dexheimer of Olathe, KS; grandchildren, Michael (Jessie) Flattem, Evan (Tamara) Fluegel, Alex Fluegel, Chelsea Fluegel, Megan Dexheimer, and Loressa Flattem (wife of Patrick); great-grandchildren, Alexa and Anthony Flattem, Austin, Cole and Delaney Fluegel; and sister-in-law, Mary Lou (Fluegel) Beath of Evansville, WI; plus many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Fluegel; parents, Lawrence and Anna Jarding; sister, Evelyn Hjelm and infant sister, Darlene; brother, Raphael and sister-in-law Helen Jarding; grandson, Patrick Flattem; mother and father-in-law, Dorothy (Bates) and Ed Fluegel; four brothers-in-law, Harold Sandness, Duane Hjelm, Sterling Beath and Dale Fluegel; nephews, John, Ted, and James Sandness; plus one special angel in heaven.
