Vernon Eugene Vlasman was born near Aurora Center, SD on October 2nd, 1929 to Joe and Rose Vlasman.  Vernon's parents divorced and he continued to live with his mother residing in George, IA, Mitchell, SD, and finally Fulton, SD when his mother remarried.

As a youth, Vernon attended Fulton High School participating in basketball and track and graduating in 1947.  After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in Japan during the Korean War.

Upon returning home he married Ilene O'Neill sharing over 50 years of love and commitment.  Vernon was employed as a road construction laborer throughout his life working for several different construction companies, but most enjoyed working for Lindekugal Construction of  Mitchell, SD.  It was during this time, that he was given the nickname, "Flash".  This happened when he was laying down water on a construction site road where there was no turn-around spot and he simply proceeded to drive the length of the track laying down water in reverse to get the job done.  Vernon was the go to man when needed as he drove semi to haul heavy equipment, could skin cat with a bull-dozer, run blade or any other heavy equipment.  He finished his employment working for Hanson County.

During their time together, Vernon and Ilene brought three sons into the world, Lynn, Barry and Kevin.  He was a strict, but loving father always putting his boys first.  He tried to instill his tremendous work ethic in his sons, making it clear that if any local farmer called for help, the answer was always to be yes.  He had a strong commitment to family and loved his brothers, his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law always enjoying Vlasman or O'Neill get togethers.

Vernon is survived by sons  Lynn (Sylvia) Vlasman of Presho, SD; Kevin (Brenda) Vlasman of Epiphany, SD; granddaughter, Crystal (Ryan) Hofer of Huron, SD; grandson, Joshua Vlasman of  Fulton, SD and two great-grandchildren, Layne and Reed Hofer; brothers, Ken (Marge) Vlasman of Tipton, IA,  Dale (Bonnie) Vlasman of Pukwana, SD, and Bob (Linda) Vlasman of Fountain Hills, AZ, brother-in-law Donald (Betty) O'Neill of  Fulton, SD, and sisters-in-law Mary O'Neill of  Mitchell, SD, Janet Vlasman of Madison, SD and Sandy Vlasman of Plankinson, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Agnes Vlasman, Rose Steiber; wife, Ilene; brothers  Duane Vlasman, Larry Vlasman; brother-in-law, George O'Neill and his son, Barry Vlasman.

We celebrate the life of an incredibly strong and loving man and all he did for us.
