Vernon Dale Metzger was born September 22, 1931, on a farm south of Mt. Vernon to William and Alvina Metzger. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church of rural Mt. Vernon on October 11, 1931, and confirmed on June 30, 1946, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Dimock. He attended rural school in Baker Township. On July 8, 1953, he married Betty Ann Plamp at St. John Lutheran Church (Hillside). Vernon was drafted into the US Army in January of 1953. Shortly after their wedding, Vernon left to serve his country during the Korean Conflict from July of 1953, to December of 1954. After he was honorably discharged from the Army, Vernon and Betty farmed northeast of Corsica, until their retirement. Vernon was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church and served on various church boards. He also served on the Garfield school board until its closing, his local township board, and held positions on the Douglas Electrical REA and the Dimock Farmers Elevator boards. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Corsica; son, Russell and wife, Doris, Corsica and their children, Nathan and wife, Kim of Dubuque, Iowa, Megan of Brookings and Mallory; daughter, Donna and husband, Jeff Gerlach and their children KayLa and Kyle all of Mt. Vernon; three sisters, Delphine Abeln and Arlene Stange of Mitchell, Norma Assmus, of Stickney; sisters-in-law, Billy Madsen, of Plankinton, Carol Metzger, of Gordon, Nebraska and Florence Moke of Mitchell and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harold and Harvey Metzger, four brothers-in-law, Bernie Abeln, Bill Moke, Ronald Assmus Sr. and Dean Stange and two nephews and one niece.
