Obituary

Vernice Porter age 90, of Mission, TX (formerly of Mitchell, SD) died June 29, 2011 in Mission, TX. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at the American Legion Cemetery. Vernice, the eldest of three children was born to George A. and Luella V. (Tompkins) Brown, was born March 9m 1921 in White, Brooking County, SD. Her parents divorced when she was very young in the depression years and she was bounced around to be raised by relatives so her mother could work to support herself with three small children. During this time she came to the "valley" to live with her aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. Alton Bentsen. After graduating high school in the 1940's she had the opportunity to travel on a Grand-scale when she worked as a "Nanny" for Paula Kelly (Mrs. Hal Dickenson) of the "Modernaires" fame when they were the main band of Glenn Miller. Soon after, she married Robert C. Miller of Knoxville, Marion County, IA and three children were born, Constance, Garry D. and Barry F. twin boys. Gary died at birth and Barry died in June of 1962. This marriage ended in divorce. Vernice married Lawrence E. Timperley in 1947 and he adopted Connie and Barry. Larry was a brakeman for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and they owned the Oasis Bar on Dakota Avenue till his untimely death in February of 1962. She moved to Mitchell and married Lester G. Porter. After they retired, Vernice and Les traveled in their motor home for 25 years and became "Winter-Texans" permanently in 2000 when they sold their home in Mitchell and built a new home in Mission, TX. Vernice is survived by one daughter, Connie (Dan) Davis, Castle Rock, WA; three step sons, Don (Deni) Porter, Sun River, OR, Gregg (Jane) Porter, Tigart, OR, Gary (Sue) Porter, Pendleton, ID; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter.
