Veona Johnston, 86, of Alexandria died Saturday, December 10, 2005 at the Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Funeral services will be held at the St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria on Tuesday, December 13, at 10:30AM. Visitation will be from 6 to 8PM on Monday at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria with a prayer service beginning at 7:00PM. Burial will be in the St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Cemetery in Alexandria. Veona was born in Parkston on July 17, 1919 to Fred and Martha (Lehr) Leischner. She grew up in the Parkston and Alexandria area and graduated from Alexandria High School. Veona married Laurence Johnston on September 15, 1938 and made their home in Alexandria. She worked at Cenex for a number of years and as deputy in the Hanson County Treasurers office until her retirement. Veona continued to live in Alexandria until she moved to Firesteel Healthcare in May of 2005. She was a member of the St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church, St. Mary of Mercy Altar Society and the National Catholic Society of Foresters. Veonas enjoyment in life were here family and friends, spending as much time with her grandchildren as she possibly could. She is survived by three daughters: Linna Johnston and fianc Bill Simpson of Mitchell; Judy Thompson and husband John of Mitchell; and Sherian Gust of Alexandria. Seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Sisters in law LaVella Bebo of Mitchell and Lillie Johnston of Fargo, ND. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1960, a grandson Terrence Mouse Gust, brother Chester and sister Mildred Heiter.
