Thomas DeJong age 52, of Lincoln, NE, formerly of Alexandria, SD, died Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Bryant West Hospital in Lincoln, NE. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the Church. Burial will be at a later date in the Germantown Cemetery in Chancellor, SD. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.
Thomas DeJong, son of Duane and Sana (Van Zittern) DeJong, was born October 12, 1958 in Mitchell, SD. He grew up on the family farm west of Carthage, SD. Tom attended grade school in Carthage and graduated from Carthage High School in 1977. While in high school, he played in the school band, on the basketball team and during summers played softball. Tom continued his education at Mitchell Technical School graduating in 1979 with a degree in auto mechanics. After graduation he enjoyed working for farmers in the Carthage, Mitchell and Stickney area. Tom also drove semi-truck.
On September 7, 1996 he married Susan Smart in Carthage, SD. He continued his love by working for farmers and driving semi-truck.
He was proud of his nieces and nephews and very proud of his two step sons, Alex and Jim. He enjoyed the farm life, his family and friends. Tom spent any spare time with them, always there to lend a helping hand or just spent time.
Survivors include his wife, Susan DeJong, Lincoln, NE; his mother, Sana De Jong, Mitchell, SD; two brothers, Douglas (Soncha) DeJong, Salt Lake City, UT, Bruce (Colleen) DeJong, Mitchell, SD; two stepsons, Alex (Lori) Smart, Salem, SD, Jim (Sharon) Platt, Lincoln, NE; seven step-grandchildren, Mahli Carr, Brooke, Bryce and Bree Smart, Nathan, Kyle and Haley Platt; three nephews, David (Patsie) De Jong, Taylorville, UT, Bruce BJ (Jill) DeJong, Alexandria, SD, Kelly (Tabatha) DeJong, Bellevue, NE; two nieces, Laura (Chris) Cooper, Indian Harbor, FL, Grace (Justin) Hoek, Mitchell, SD; along with many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, two aunts, Genevieve and Frances Sullivan; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
