Sylvester "Sy" John Walz, age 88, of Mitchell, SD died Thursday, August 25, 2011 at Tripp Good Samaritan Society in Tripp, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston, SD with burial at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Monday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a scripture service followed by a rosary service beginning at 7 PM. Sy Walz, son of Wendlen and Clara (Hohn) Walz, was born on November 29, 1922 on a farm three miles east of Beardsley, SD. The next year they moved to a farm seven miles east of Parkston (or three miles west of Milltown). Sy lived there for 29 years and farmed with his Dad. He was the oldest of three children. Sy attended the Parkston Catholic School from grades 1 thru 4 and then attended District #47 Sterling Country School and graduated from the 8th grade. He enjoyed trapping skunks and minks in his younger years, selling their furs. Sy also hunted rabbits and wild ducks and did some fishing. On January 8, 1951, Sy was united in marriage with Clara Rose Hamberger at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Tyndall, SD. The couple lived three miles west and one and a half miles south of Dimock for 31 years where Sy farmed and did welding for the neighbors. He owned and operated Walz Electric and Plumbing for 22 years. In 1971 to 1973 Sy worked at the Wagner and Rosebud hospitals doing electrical work. From 1974 to 1998, Sy owned and operated Nesca Supply, an electrical motor and electrical supply business in Mitchell, SD. In July of 1979, the couple moved to Mitchell. Clara the love of his life, passed away on March 30, 2002. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Sy joined the Knights of Columbus in 1947 and is a life-time member. He was also a member of the Knight of Columbus 4th degree for 10 years. Sy was on the Star Township board for five years. He was a governor of the Moose Lodge for two years and Grand Counselor of United Commercial Traveler for three years. He joined the Good Samaritan family on February 8, 2007. Grateful for having shared his life are his two children, Marvin Walz, Mitchell, SD, Marlene (Paul) Mutziger, rural Mitchell, SD, five grand children, Dawn (Chris) Letellier, Daniel, Dana, Duane and Dustin Mutziger; a brother, Elmer (Quila) Walz, Parkston, SD. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Walz; his parents; a grandson, Dale; and one sister, Delores.
