Susan Marie Schumm, age 64, of Alexandria, SD died Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Alexandria. Visitation will be from 6 PM to 8PM Friday at the church with a prayer service beginning at 7:30PM. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery in Alexandria.
Susan Marie Schumm, daughter of John and Maude Marie (Clark) Robertson, was born in Portsmouth, VA on December 22, 1952. Her father was serving in the military and lived in different places. The family lived in Oklahoma, Carthage, SD, Morocco Africa, Rhode Island and then back to Mitchell, SD. Susan attended school in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1971.
After her schooling, Susan moved to a ranch near Pierre, SD, later moving to Custer, SD. While in Custer, she was employed as a lumber jack, at a hotel restaurant and finally as a CNA at the State Hospital in Custer. Susan was united in marriage with Paul H. Schumm on July 16, 1977 in Custer, SD. The couple moved to Gillette. WY where Susan was employed as a teacher's aide for handicapped children at Hillcrest School. On July 16, 1987 they moved to Alexandria, SD and continued to live there until her death.
Susan enjoyed mahjong, crocheting, playing cards and going to coffee and visiting with family and friends. In her younger years she enjoyed playing softball.
She is a member of the Methodist Church.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Zeke Schumm, Alexandria, SD; step children, Paul Schumm, Quincey, IL, Sonja Rose (Brian) Turner, Quincey, IL, Keith Mosley, Durham, MO and Rhonda (Dale) McGaa Pine Ridge, SD; numerous grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; a brother, John (Linda) Robertson, Alexandria, SD; a sister, Delores (James) Thomas, Mitchell, SD; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her parents; a sister, Barbara Jean; a nephew, Sammy and a great nephew, Thomas.
