Shirley Lillian Vinz, age 90, of Spencer, SD died Monday, January 2, 2012 at Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Friday, January 6, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer, SD with burial at the South Spencer Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Shirley Lillian (Kneen) Vinz, daughter of Harold and Beatrice (Estabrook) Kneen, was born May 5, 1921 in Forestburg, SD. She graduated from Artesian High School. After high school, Shirley worked with her father on the family farm while attending Methodist Hospital Nursing School. She graduated with a nursing degree in 1943. She worked off and on at the Methodist Hospital until retiring in her 60's. She then became a full time farmer with Virgil for 20 more years until 2003. She was united in marriage with Virgil Henry Vinz on May 28, 1944 in Alexandria, SD. The couple farmed near Spencer, SD. Shirley spent her entire life on the farm until moving to Firesteel Healthcare Center in 2007. She had many loves: Virgil, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; flowers, painting, feeding their black cattle and running a tractor for her husband. She extended her love out to family, friends and her parakeet "Petie"; which would climb down Virgils arm and eat off his plate. Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Judi A. Larson, Artesian, SD; three grandchildren, Dustin Hoffman, Sioux Falls, SD and his children, Darienne and Destini, Brandon Hoffman and his wife, Victoria, Sioux Falls, SD and their children, Korbin, Kenzie, Blayde, and Skye, Krystle Richards and her husband, Clint, Sioux Falls, SD and their child Lucille; a daughter-in-law, Judy Vinz and her two children Jason Vinz and Amber Vinz. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Virgil David "Butch" Vinz; her parents; and a son-in-law, Virgil Dean Larson; two sisters, Elenore Hendrix and Clarice Kruger; also two brothers, Warren and Orie Kneen; and a brother-in-law Cliff Nelson.
