Obituary

Shirley Jean Ruml age 83, of Letcher died Wednesday, December 3, 2014 as a result of an automobile accident. Funeral services will be 2:30 PM Sunday, December 7, 2014 at the Letcher Community Church in Letcher, SD. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery, rural Letcher. Shirley Jean Ruml was born in Sanborn County on June 5, 1931 to Olaf and Lizzie (Jansen) Larson. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Letcher. She attended Christopher School in Elliott Township for her first eight grades and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1949. Shirley then attended Dakota Wesleyan University receiving her teaching certificate. She taught school in the Lake Andes area for a short time. Shirley also worked as the bookkeeper at Newberry's Dept. Store in Mitchell. Shirley was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church until she married Robert Ruml on March 14, 1954 and since has been a member of the Letcher Community Church. She and Robert celebrated 60 years of marriage on March 14,2014. Shirley was a member of Women's Fellowship, American Legion Auxiliary for 60 years, Extension Club Member for 40 years, Senior Citizens and held offices in all organizations. She liked sports and attended all the kids' events and DWU ballgames. Shirley loved playing cards and bingo. Grateful for sharing her life are her four children, Owen Ruml of Letcher, Mark (Kathy) Ruml of Mitchell, Julie (Phil) Allred of Ephraim, UT and Scott (Susan) Ruml of Freeman; one sister Margaret (DeWayne) Weiland of Mitchell; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws Lois Clarambeau of Letcher and Verla Hoing of Kimball; brother-in-law Lawrence Ruml of Letcher; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert; parents Olaf and Lizzie Larson; her father and mother-in-law George and Anna Ruml; one son Randy, one granddaughter, Amber, one great-granddaughter, Brooklyn; brothers-in-law Alvin Hoing, Alton Clarambeau and Burton Ruml; sister-in-law Karen Ruml .
