Shirley M. Rubert, daughter of Virgil and Mary (Kreutzfeldt) Sudbery was born July 13, 1920 in Vienna, SD. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1937. She was united in marriage with Robert Rubert on October 8, 1941 in Richmond, CA. The couple eventually made their home in Alexandria, SD. She was a "stay at home mom", gardening, sewing, canning, cooking, and caring for five children was a full time job. Later on she was a waitress in her mother's café before moving to Mitchell in 1962. She was employed at Woolworth's and Sears in Mitchell. She retired from Sears in 1981, after 17 ½ years of employment. Shirley was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, VFW, and American Legion Auxiliary. Shirley has been a resident at Golden Living Center at Salem, SD for five years and nine months. Grateful for sharing her life are her three children, Sharon (Bob) Browen, Salem, SD, James (Vicki) Rubert, Lakeville, MN, June (Bob) Smith, Aberdeen, SD; twelve grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert; two sons Charles and Richard; two sisters and one brother; one daughter-in-law; one grandson and one great grandson.
