Shirley Polkinghorn was born on March 18, 1924, in Armour, South Dakota, to Lester and Lucile (Barrett) Polkinghorn. She graduated from Armour High School in 1942 and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Yankton College in 1946. She became a teacher at high schools in Westbrook, Magnolia, and Slayton, Minnesota. On January 14, 1950, she was united in marriage with Melvin "Pat" Shaw in Mankato, Minnesota. He died in June of 1967. She moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and worked for Dr. Edward Pasek until she met and married Duane Bauhs on May 31, 1975, in Sioux Falls. The couple farmed southwest of Ethan until 1990 and then moved to Mitchell. Duane died on June 30, 1997. Shirley was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ of Mitchell, Women's Fellowship, Senior Citizens, and RSVP. Grateful for having shared her life are her three sisters-in-law, Marguerite Livesay of Mitchell, Joyce Leischner of Parkston, and JoAnn Ray of Rapid City, and several nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and her two husbands. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Congregational United Church of Christ of Mitchell.
