Obituary

Sherman was born October 28, 1925, on the farm where he lived most of his life, in Hanson County to Elmer and Rosa (Fisher) Letcher. He married Ellestine Schoppert on February 20, 1949 in Parkston. They resided on the same farm that he was born on for 50 years until their retirement. They moved to Mitchell, SD in November of 1998. He and Ellestine were members of the United Brethren Church at Milltown, SD. He served as a County Commissioner for Hanson County for 22 years, until his retirement. He loved playing the piano, even though he couldn't read a note. He played everything by ear. His love of music continues through his sons and grandchildren. Sherman loved farming, including taking great pride in all of the animals he raised. He took pride in his work as a county commissioner. He sensed he must have been doing a good job because he always ran un-opposed. His faith in God was a driving factor in his life. He was a living example to his sons, grandchildren and to all who knew him. He is survived by his three sons, Dale and wife, Kyna, of Mitchell, SD; Jerome and wife, Peggy, of Aberdeen, SD; and David and wife, Terry, of Bennington, NE; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and one sister Fern Huber of Bridgewater, SD. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellestine, three sisters, Leona Whitman, Faye Bahmuller, and Shirley Letcher; two brothers, Kenneth and LeRoy Letcher; his parents; and two great-granddaughters, Ellestine and Louisa Malcom.
