Sergey Alan Gordon Pretre, age 30 of Mitchell, SD passed away in his sleep at home on Thursday, December 4, 2025. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, January 10, 2026 at Harvest Community Church.  Interment with Military Honors will be at American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, January 9, 2026 at Harvest Community Church with a time of sharing beginning at 6:15 PM.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.

Born Sergey Museibovuch Patsera on Oct 17, 1995 in Odessa Ukraine, he was adopted at age 13 from an orphanage in Odessa by his parents Alan and Nancy Pretre on Jan 19, 2009, and he came to Mitchell to join new siblings Mark and Valentina.

He attended Mitchell Christian School and Sunshine Bible Academy, then graduated from Mitchell Second Chance High School in May of 2016.

Sergey was a member of Boy Scout Troop 75 in Mitchell with brother Mark, enjoying the camping activities.

He worked at Twin City Fan as a welder until he joined the US Army in April 2017.

In the Army, Sergey was trained for the Military Police, and he worked as MP throughout his military career. While in the Army he was deployed with security forces to Ft. Riley KS, the US/Mexican border, Grafenwöhr Germany, a NATO unit in Poland, and he finished his time at Wiesbaden Germany.

Sergey injured his back in basic training, and it bothered him throughout his military career. At the rank of Sergeant, he separated from the Army with an Honorable Discharge, being placed on partial VA Disability.

Sergey returned to Mitchell in Mar 2023 from Germany and enrolled at Mitchell Technical College using the GI Bill, graduating in May of 2025 with a degree in Machining and Manufacturing. The last two summers he worked as a machinist intern at Dynamic Engineering in Watertown. Last summer he competed in Atlanta for the national Skills USA competition in machining.

In the Fall of 2025, Sergey enrolled in an advanced program at MTC, in furtherance of his machining, welding, and business skills. He was voted by his dept faculty to serve as a program ambassador, and had traveled to some high schools in the state to promote MTC. After school, he worked night shifts at Twin City Fan as a machinist.

He was baptized into the Christian faith as a youth in Odessa Ukraine at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the oldest churches in Odessa, while American missionaries in Odessa helped him to become a Christian. After coming to America, he had a difficult time adjusting to his new family life, but with his family and friends supporting him and God's grace, he grew into a terrific man who loved his family, was liked by all who knew him, and had a plan for his future.

His sudden passing from an undiagnosed brain tumor was a shock for all who knew and loved him. But trusting in God's promise, we know we will see him again someday, when all tears are wiped away.

Sergey is survived by his parents, Alan and Nancy (Skoglund) Pretre, brother Mark, sister Valentina, all from Mitchell, and a daughter Hesedeh, of Texas, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was also like a son to the Hopper family of Martinsburg, West Virginia, who also grieve his loss, parents Terry and Cathy Hopper, sisters Hannah Tanguay (Justin), Katelyn Bender (Cade), Emma, and brothers Benjamin and Mason, along with their extended family.
