Sana De Jong, age 84, of Mitchell, died Wednesday July 23, 2014 at the Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services are 1:30 PM on Saturday July 26, 2014 at the 1st Presbyterian Church with burial at Germantown Cemetery, Rural Chancellor, SD at 4:00 PM. Vistiation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday July 25, 2014 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Sana De Jong was born on March 8, 1930 to Simon and Dena (Janssen) Van Zittern on a farm near Chancellor, SD. She grew up by Chancellor, and at the age of 3 her father was killed by a bull. After a time of living on the farm with her mother, they moved to Avon, where Sana graduated from Avon High School in 1948. Sana was united in marriage with Duane De Jong on May 5, 1949 in Avon. In 1951, the couple moved to Carthage. To this union three boys were born. Sana and Duane worked side by side on the farm. After the boys left home, Sana worked a couple years in Howard at Wrap it. In 2007, Sana moved to Meadow Lawn Apartments in Mitchell. She was involved in the RSVP, Linus Project, and Presbyterian Church. Sana enjoyed being with her family and especially teaching her grandchildren to play cards. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, crocheting, and making quilts for Linus. Her faith was important to her. Sana is survived by her son, Douglas (Son Cha) of Salt Lake City, UT; daughter-in-law Colleen De Jong of Mitchell; 5 grandchildren David (Patsie) of Utah, Laura (Chris) Cooper of Germany, Bruce Jr. (Jill) of Mitchell, Kelly (Tabitha) of Nebraska, and Grace (Justin) Hoek of Mitchell; 10 Great-Grandchildren, Ava and Paige De Jong of Utah, Reilly and Addison Cooper of Germany, Taylor and Kira De Jong of Mitchell, Michala and Tyler De Jong of Nebraska, and Jazzmyn and Vyncent Hoek of Mitchell; special friends Collen Jacobs and Rus Phinney; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband; two sons Bruce and Thomas; her parents; sisters-in-law Francis Sullivan and Genevie De Jong; and her mother and father in-law. Sana requested no flowers, instead memorials to the Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice.
