S.D. Bud Bender, age 77, of rural Fulton, SD died Saturday, December 30, 2006 at his home under hospice care. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell, SD with burial at Graceland Cemetery in Fulton, SD. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the Will Funeral Chapel. S.D. Bud Bender, son of Theodore and Cecila (Brakke) Bender, was born on the family farm north of Fulton, SD on October 6, 1929. Bud attended country school in the Fulton area. After his schooling he helped on the family farm. Bud entered the US Army on March 20, 1952 and served as a trainer. He was united in marriage with Jean Learn on January 17, 1953 at the United Methodist Church in Fulton, SD. Bud was honorably discharged on March 19, 1954 and returned to the Fulton area. The couple farmed in the Fulton area where he raised livestock and feed cattle until Buds retirement in 2000. Bud was a member of the Fulton United Methodist Church, served on the Fulton Farmers Elevator Board for 26 years and as treasurer of the Fairview Township board for 20 years. He also was an Epley Corn Dealer. In his spare time, Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, tinkering in the shop and going to horse shows. Bud also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, going to cattle auctions, feeding cattle, dancing and traveling. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Jean, rural Fulton, SD; four children, Joan Urbanski and her husband, Frank, Dakota Dunes, SD, Marilyn VenOsdel and her husband, Terry, Alexandria, SD, Scott Bender and his wife, Deb, rural Fulton, SD, Shari Hilton and her husband, Mark, Apopka, FL; nine grandchildren, Justin Urbanski, Watertown, SD, Ashley Bengtzen and her husband, Jeff, McLean, VA, Melissa Cox, Mitchell, SD, Paul VenOsdel, Fulton, SD, Sara Kayser and her husband, Nick, Alexandria, SD, Rebecca Arend and her husband, Michael, Alexandria, SD, Neil Bender and his wife, Emily, Fulton, SD, Samantha and Spencer Hilton, Apopka, FL; eight great grandchildren, Kelsey Bender, Jaden Urbanski, Leslie Cox, Caleb (Beatch) VenOsdel, Emma Urbanski, Matthew and Joshua Cox, and Kennedy Bender; a brother, Melvin Bender and his wife, Dorothy, Mitchell, SD; three sisters, Carolyn Easton, Mitchell, SD, Shirley Ritzman and her husband, Gary, Madison, SD, Judy Dillon and her husband, Matt, Hollywood, MD; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Learn, St. Paul, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jean; three brother-in-laws, Wayne Easton, James Learn and Franklin Learn. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Mitchell Community Hospice Services or the Fulton Graceland Cemetery.
