Ruth Schimming, 102, of Mitchell, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Dougherty Hospice and Palliative Care in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM on Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Rev. Thomas Brown will be officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Lawn Cemetery in Geddes, SD. Ruth Margaret (Ingalls) Schimming was born November 19, 1910 to parents Edna Rowena (Clements) Ingalls and Maurice Leigh Ingalls. Ruth graduated from high school in Hampton, IA where she was very involved with all phases of music activities. She furthered her music education by studying with various professional pianists and organists. Ruth married Albert John Schimming on August 23, 1931 in Sheldon, IA. They had 3 children: Marilyn, Maurine, and Leigh. Ruth taught elementary music at Litchfield and Longfellow elementary schools while pursuing her music teaching degree from Dakota Wesleyan University (1967). She was always active in church and community music activities. She was a 57 year member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was head organist, choir director (children, adult and handbell) and mentored many young people. She taught private piano and organ lessons, directed the Mitchell Men's Barbershop Chorus, sang in several DWU choirs and played for countless weddings and funerals. Ruth was active in Lutheran Womens Missionary League, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Kappa Phi, Daughters of the American Revolution, Music Educators, American Guild of Organists, and South Dakota Retired Teachers Association. Her life was spent in Christian service through her music and her life. Preceding her in death were her parents, two sisters, one brother, and one son, Leigh. Surviving are her children: Marilyn (George) Dorr of Elk Grove, CA, Maurine (Mel) Bietz, Gillette, WY, and 11 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
