Rose Stocking

Rose Stocking, 93, of Bismarck, ND passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Missouri Slope Nursing Home in Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Interment will follow at the American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of your choice in support of our Veterans.

Rose was born to Lena (Kautt) and William Herred on June 27, 1933, in Linton, North Dakota, where she was also baptized at St. Anthony Catholic Church. She spent her early childhood years in Linton until her family relocated to Mobridge, South Dakota, where she graduated from Mobridge High School.

Dedicated to shaping young minds, Rose attended Mount Marty College to earn her teaching certificate and later graduated from Northern State University with her degree in education. She spent a distinguished 35-year career teaching kindergarten and first grade, impacting on countless children, beginning in Orono, Minnesota and Miller, Centerville, Mitchell (Holy Spirit), Fort Pierre, and Pierre, South Dakota, before her retirement in 1994.

On July 18, 1959, Rose married the love of her life, Bernard Stocking. Together they raised three sons: Timothy (Ivette) Stocking, Michael (Ronda) Stocking, and Patrick (Janelle) Stocking.

Rose was an active and vibrant member of her community, participating in the Corn Chicks Club, her beloved bridge club, and Mahjong group. Always involved with her growing boys, she served as their Cub Scout and 4-H leader, a big supporter of their sports and music, and active in the church as a catechism teacher and choir member. She possessed a wonderful eye for a good deal as well and truly loved finding bargains for everyone around her to enjoy.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her children, Timothy (Ivette), Michael (Ronda), and Patrick (Janelle); her grandchildren, Elisa (Michael) Landgaard, Nicole Stocking, Christopher (Britney) Stocking, Travis Stocking, Aaron Stocking, Michelle (Spencer) Hill, Jonathan Hart, Jason (Shannon) Williams, and Blaine (Stephanie) Williams; sixteen cherished great-grandchildren; twenty-two nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lena (Kautt) and William Herred; her husband, Bernard Stocking; her sister, Eleanor Simpson; her brother, Clement Herred; her grandson, Travis Stocking; and all brothers and sisters-in-law.
