Roger W. Garness, 88, of Mitchell passed away Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.  A prayer service will be at 1:00 PM Monday, June 28, 2021 at Will Funeral Chapel with visitation to follow until 3:00 PM.  Full Military rites will be at Will Funeral Chapel.

Roger was born September 17, 1932 in Carthage, SD to Olaf and Mabel (Sneesby) Garness.  He graduated from Carthage High School in 1950.  He joined the navy in 1951 and served on the USS Currituck. He was in the Navy during the Korean war and earned the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1955.

Roger was united in marriage with Jessie Jones Bucholz in 1961. Roger worked in Carthage until 1969 before moving to Mitchell to work for the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks.  He then drove truck for UPS until retirement in 1991.

Roger liked to fish and hunt with friends.  He enjoyed RVing with his family, reading, and gardening.  Roger wintered in Phoenix and Mesa.  He was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge.

Grateful for having shared his life is his wife, sons, David (Kris) Bucholz, Dennis (Laurie) Bucholz, Robert (Blanca) Bucholz, Randy Bucholz, Brett (Janna) Garness, Daughter, Vanessa Garness, brothers, Leonard Garness, Dennis (Alice) Garness, nineteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Carolyn LaPlant.
