Obituary

Roger Allen age 76, of Mitchell, SD died Friday, October 24, 2014 at the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be 2:30 PM Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church in Mitchell with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 700 PM Monday at the Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell, SD. Roger Allen, son of Wayne D. and Lorraine (Reed) Allen, was born May 10, 1938 in Mitchell, SD. He grew up and received his education in Mitchell, graduating from Mitchell High School in 1956. Roger then attended Dakota Wesleyan University and received his degree in teaching in 1960. He then earned his master degree from the University of South Dakota in 1963. Roger began his teaching career in the fall of 1963 at Mitchell High School. He taught at MHS for 37 years and served chair of the English Department. He then taught for 8 years at DWU as an Assistant Professor of Communications. He was a life member of the United Teaching Profession, a Past Vice President of the SDEA, a Past NEA Director for SD and served on NEA Board of Directors. He also served on the Mitchell Education Association as Vice President, Secretary, Salary Committee and Welfare Committee. Roger was the Past President of the SDEA Association of Classroom Teachers, a NEA Delegate to World Confederation of the Organization of the Teaching Profession in London and Dublin. Roger served as Co-Chair for the Corn Palace Committee, Past Exalted Ruler of Mitchell Elks, a member of the Mitchell Centennial Committee and an actor in the Mitchell Community Theater (ACT). Roger received the DWU Outstanding Educator in the year 1991, Outstanding Young Educator in Mitchell in 1968, Outstanding Young Man of America in the 1966 and 1969, and Community Leader of America in 1969. Grateful for having shared his life are his brother, Wayne (Doreen) Allen, Brandon, SD; three nieces, Carla (Gregg) Damme, Sioux Falls, SD, Shelly (Phil) Lozano, Porterville, CA, Juli (Scott) Peterson, Brandon, SD; great nieces and nephews, Karlee, Kaitlin and Kiah Damme, Shelby and Shane Lozano, Jordan, Jessica and Nicolas Peterson. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne D. Allen; his mother, Lorraine Allen Fouberg; and his step father, Elmo Fouberg. Memorials may be directed to the Mitchell Community Theater (ACT) or First Lutheran Church.
