Robert R. Rubert, age 92,of Salem, SD died Wednesday October 21, 2009 at Golden Living Center in Salem, SD. Celebration of Life service will be 2:00 PM Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell, SD with burial at Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Friday at the Will Funeral Chapel with the family present from 7 to 8 PM. th burial and military rites at Servicemens
Robert R. Rubert, son of Clarence and Leah (Doty) Rubert, was born December 18, 1916 in Forestburg, SD. He lived and attended school in Forestburg and Mitchell. Bob was a member of the National Guard until he was called to active duty in 1940 in the California State Control, at Fort Ord, CA. He was called back to active duty in 1942 and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater until discharged in July of 1945.
He was united in marriage with Shirley Sudbery on October 8, 1941 in Chico, CA. The couple eventually made their home in Alexandria, SD where Bob owned and operated the Texaco station and caf. While in Alexandria he served for many years as fire chief and on the school board. In 1962 he moved to Mitchell, SD and was employed with the City of Mitchell as a heavy equipment operator until retiring in 1981.
Bob was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was also a member of the 40 and 8. His favorite pastimes were his family, hunting and fishing. Bob was also green before green was in by recycling junk. He also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Shirley, Salem, SD; five children, Sharon (Bob) Browen, Salem, SD, Charles (Karen) Rubert, Rockford, IL, Richard Rubert, Rockford, IL, James (Vicki) Rubert, Lakeville, MN, June (Bob) Smith, Aberdeen, SD; 11 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; five great great grand children; a sister, Geraldine Franks, Mitchell, SD; and a large extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; a daughter-in-law and a grandson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be gifted to the Zion Lutheran Church youth groups.
