Robert Shorty Keen, age 63, of Letcher, SD died Sunday, December 20, 2004 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Friday, Dec. 24, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Thursday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a scripture reading at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in St. Scholasticas Catholic Cemetery at Letcher. Robert Keen was born April 20th, 1941, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Mitchell, SD to James and Martha (Van)Overschelde) Keen. He was raised on the family farm near Letcher, SD and graduated from Letcher High School in 1959. He then joined the Army National Guard and after completing his training he returned to the farm and operated a grain and livestock operation until he passed away. Robert was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching local high school and college teams compete, especially basketball, a sport he starred in at Letcher High School. Other accomplishments included being a Future Farmers of America National Land Judging Champion and past post commander for the Letcher American Legion. Robert, a life long bachelor was a kind and caring person and dearly loved by his family and friends. He loved to travel. Robert is survived by one sister, Sharon Beedle and husband, Dean, of Mitchell; three brothers, James L. Keen and wife, Irma, Riverside, Illinois, David Keen, Seattle, Washington and Brian Keen and wife, Brenda, Pinch, West Virginia; and twenty nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew David Beedle in 1985. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials.
