Obituary

Robert "Bob" Francis Kirwan, 77, of Mitchell, passed away while surrounded by his loving family on September 7, 2013 in Omaha, NE. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, September 12, 2013 with a prayer service and rosary at 7:00PM at Will Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Friday, September 13, 2013 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell, with Fr. Michael Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel. Bob was born August 27, 1936 in Gregory, SD to Phillip and Agnes Kirwan. He married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Jean Schlaht in 1958 and together they raised four children. After high school Bob attended USD in Vermillion, SD, where he graduated with a B.S. in 1963. Bob worked for 39 years with the South Dakota Department of Transportation in the cities of Vermillion, Chamberlain, and Mitchell. He was the Mitchell Region Engineer from 1972 to 1998. During his lengthy career Bob served as resident engineer for the Interstate-90 Missouri River Bridge in Chamberlain, the Highway-37 bypass in Mitchell, and many other roadway improvements in a 22 county area. Bob was active in the United Way, the Mitchell Area Adjustment Training Center, Past Exalted Ruler of BPOE 1059 Mitchell, as well as State President of the South Dakota Benevolent Protective Order Elks. He also served as a board member of the South Dakota State Employees Organization and trustee of the South Dakota Retirement System. Bob enjoyed hunting and golfing, and many traveling adventures with his wife, Sandy, journeying to different states and countries to see their children and grandchildren, and meeting new people and making new friends. Together they traveled across Alaska, and to China, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, and the Panama Canal. Grateful for having shared his life are his daughters Kandace (Greg) Menning of Waco, TX and Kristi (Yong) Lee of Ladera Ranch CA, and sons Michael (Barbara) Kirwan of Elkhorn, NE and Steve Kirwan of Toluca Lake, CA; seven grandchildren, Rachel Hernandez, Anna Koehn, Samuel, Grace, and Maria Kirwan, and Katie and Jessica Lee; his sister Rosemary Smith of Redwood City CA; sister-in-law Betty Kirwan of Brandan, SD; brother-in-law Rollie Schlaht of Omaha, NE; and his very special friend Sandy Wenzel of Mitchell, SD. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Duane and Jerome, sister Phyllis, and his wife who passed away in 2010. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Elks National Scholarship Foundation.
