Obituary

Robert Allen Conroy, age 78, of Mitchell, SD died Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Firesteel Healthcare Community surrounded by his family. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Monday March 5, 2018 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with burial and military rites at Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Sunday, March 4, 2018 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 6:00 PM.

Robert A. Conroy, son of John and Esther (Paulson) Conroy, was born in rural Artesian, SD. He grew up in rural Artesian and attended school there until 8th grade.  Bob  then moved with his family to Mitchell, SD where he attended school.

Bob was united in marriage with Jane Usher on August 10, 1959 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. He entered the US Army on January 30, 1961 and stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX and also served in Greenland. Bob was honorably discharged January 29, 1964 and returned to Mitchell where he continued serving his country with the South Dakota National Guard until 1967.

In Mitchell he was employed at Rozum's Motors and United Auto Parts for a short time. In 1968 Bob began his career with Campbell Supply. He retired in 2014 after 46 years of service with Campbell Supply. Bob and Jane enjoyed their travels to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Florida, and Phoenix.  They also cruised to Cabo San Lucas, and visited Branson to hear his favorite singer Daniel O'Donnell.  In his retirement the couple continued to live in Mitchell. During the late stages of Bob's  Lewy Body Dementia, they lived in Sioux Falls for a short time and then returned to Mitchell and  he lived at Edgewood Memory Care.   Bob  entered the Firesteel Healthcare Community in November of 2017.  He was always happy, and never let his dementia change his fun loving, jokester personality, or caring attitude.  Bob was always concerned about others before himself.  He was famous for offering more food to people, and telling them "you have to keep your strength up." Bob's best advice was that sometimes, "silence is golden."  He will always be remembered as the "Man with a smile on his face" and was also very particular about his car care.  Bob was often seen scrubbing the bugs off the front of his car after every trip.  His pride and joy was his 1993 Chevy S10 long box pick-up. Bob was a devoted Minnesota Vikings and NASCAR fan.  You could usually find him watching football or a race every Sunday afternoon.  Bob loved his grandchildren, and enjoyed spending time with them and bringing a smile to their faces.

He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the American Legion.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 58 years, Jane Conroy, Mitchell, SD; five children, Beth (Carrie Tesch) Conroy, Mitchell, SD, Cathy (Craig) Fogel, Sioux Falls, SD, Mike (Holly) Conroy, Sioux Falls, SD, Sharon (Sterling) Woods, Phoenix, AZ, Susan (Brian) Daughters, Mitchell, SD; eight grandchildren, Ashley Daughters, Tyler Daughters, Haley Woods, Lindsey Woods, Travis Fogel, Logan Fogel, Andrew Conroy and Ryan Conroy; a great granddaughter, Ophelia Guerrero; a brother, George (Jean) Conroy, Mitchell, SD, a sister-in-law, Mary Usher, Chandler, AZ and his only nephew, David (Veronica) Usher, and his son Caden, San Diego, CA.
