Bob was born November 4, 1923 in Alexandria, SD, the middle of 5 children, to James T. and Mary M. (Morrison) Campbell. He grew up and attended school in Alexandria and Mitchell, graduating from the 8th grade. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Ft. Meade. Bob was drafted into the U.S. Army and proudly served his country during World War II, seeing action in Rhineland Central Europe where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He re-enlisted for service with the burial detachment at Arlington Cemetery and he was honorably discharged from military service in March 1947. He worked with his father and his brother, James, in the Campbell family auto/implement repair shop. He married Dorothy Klinger on July 14, 1951 at the Methodist Church in Alexandria and to this union one daughter, Darla, was born. Along with repairing all types of motorized vehicles, including the school buses, he was also a long time school bus driver, known by many children as "the Mean Bus Driver"! They lived and worked in Alexandria, and even after retirement from Campbell's Repair Shop in 1981, he helped local farmers with their field work. In 1995, they moved to Mitchell and later to Sioux Falls in 2003, living at Trail Ridge Retirement Community at the time of his death. Bob enjoyed fishing and hunting, and just spending time with his friends and family. He was especially proud of the military service tradition that was passed on to his son-in-law and grandsons who all have proudly served in the US Military. Bob was thrilled when he was able to be part of the November 2009 Honor Flight trip to Washington, DC and that entire trip was a memory he treasured.
