Dick came into this world on March 5, 1938 in Mitchell, SD. He was the number 5 of 6 children to Russell and Katherine Kenton. His Dad was a seasonal laborer, house mover in summer and cutting ice in the winter, His Mom was a seamstress, they didn't have a lot, most people in those days were in the same boat.

He went on to Junior High and Senior High in Mitchell, graduating in June of 1956. He later attended a considerably number of months of technical training with the National Cash Register Co.

In February of 1961, Dick went to work for the National Cash Register Co. in Santa Ana, CA. He was later transferred to Sioux Falls, SD in 1969 and in 1973 transferred to Mitchell, SD. Dick retired from the National Cash Register Co in 1993 and started his own business in 1994 with his friend JJ. He retired again in 2004.
