Reuben was born April 13, 1923 in Davison County on a farm south of Mt. Vernon, South Dakota to Ernest & Bertha (Herbst) Neugebauer. He enjoyed growing up on a farm where he and his brothers and sisters played out doors with dogs and horses and worked hard together doing chores.
He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Dimock, SD.
He attended Dakota Wesleyan University and Gustavus Adolphus College where he majored in accounting.
He took an accounting job in Minneapolis, Minnesota. where he enjoyed Arthur Murray Dance training and going to ballroom dances. He decided he preferred spending time with people to office work and after traveling the Midwest selling seed and paint, as well as briefly going back to his roots working on farms, he chose to be a salesman in the insurance business. He enjoyed selling insurance in the Mitchell area for 50 years. He once won an award at an insurance training seminar for being able to pick up the sales dialogue and continue it longer than any of his fellow agents. He loved making people laugh with funny and sometimes sentimental stories and poems. One of his favorite poems ended with In dollars and cents dont count your wealth, but sum it up in friends and good health, in the chance not to give material things, but the gladness your smile and good words bringif you havent a soul to love or care you are hard up though a millionaire. Reuben said his greatest accomplishment was raising his son Christopher and daughter Carla.
He is survived by his son, Christopher Neugebauer and wife Ruth and daughter Carla (Neugebauer) Maas and husband Brian as well as his grandchildren Christen and Claire Neugebauer; Peter, Laura, Alec, and Matthew Maas and his brother Norbert.
Reuben was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 6 sisters. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be directed to Lungs For Life cancer research.
