Opal Johnson age 99, of Bridgewater formerly of Mt. Vernon died Thursday October 15, 2009 at Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater. Funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM Monday evening at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 Monday evening at the Will Funeral Chapel.
Burial will be 10:00 AM Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
Opal Marble was born July 19, 1910 in Mt. Vernon, SD. She grew up in Mt. Vernon and attended school there. Opal graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1928 and later attended Dakota Wesleyan University where she received her Teaching Certificate. She taught school in Aurora and Davison County for two years.
Opal was united in marriage with Jesse S. Johnson on June 5, 1935 in Mitchell, SD. The couple made their home on a farm north of Mt. Vernon. They continued to farm there until 1989. In 1990, Opal moved to Plankinton and lived there until 1997. She then made her home at the Storla Sunset Home until it closed in 2004. Opal then became a resident at Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater, SD.
Opal enjoyed cooking, camping and farm life. She loved spending time with Jesse Boy.
Grateful for having shared her life are her niece, Sheryl Wilson, Mitchell, SD; other nieces and nephews, cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse on December 19, 1990; and her parents.
