Olive (Ollie) Mary Kelder Rissky was born in Fargo, North Dakota, on November 28, 1930 at St. John's Hospital to Victor and Alice (Lemna) Kelder. She died peacefully at Avera Brady on August 23, 2020. A memorial service will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at Will Funeral Chapel, burial to follow at Servicemen's Cemetery.
She grew up on the family farm north of Verona, North Dakota. Ollie went to grade school in Verona and country school for her middle school years. Ollie attended high school at Sacred Heart Academy (Shanley High School), living with a great aunt and two cousins in Fargo, ND. Ollie spent summers working on the farm, feeding the chickens, gathering eggs, running the sweep rake to gather the hay, and helping her mother with the cooking for the farm help during fall harvest. This is where she learned to be an excellent cook and baker.
In the fall of 1948, Ollie entered nurses training at St. John's Hospital in Fargo, N.D. graduating in 1951 earning her RN degree. Ollie started her career at St. John's in the operating room. She continued her nursing career at St. Michael's in Tyndall S.D. and then at St. Josephs (Queen of Peace) when they moved to Mitchell. During her time at St. Joseph's Ollie was named Assistant Director of Nursing. She finished her nursing career at Brady Nursing Home (Avera Brady). She also spent many years educating and raising funds for the American Cancer Society.
Ollie married Roy Rissky on June 5 th 1952 at St.Rapheal's Catholic Church in Verona, N.D. Ollie and Roy celebrated 60 beautiful years of marriage in June of 2012. She did a great job managing her career and raising 5 children at the same time. After retirement Ollie and Roy enjoyed 17 wonderful winters in Mesa, Arizona enjoying warm weather, visits from family and many Happy Hours with great friends.
Ollie was very grateful for her friendships of over 60 years with the gals from her bridge clubs, Mah Jongg, and Red Hats (Corn Chicks). She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and sang in the church choir for several years. Ollie loved following sports teams and kept detailed notes when watching or listening to her favorite teams. Those teams were the Mitchell Kernels, Dakota Wesleyan Women and Men's Basketball, Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings and especially teams that her grandchildren played for.
Her life was a blessing, and a treasure. She was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure. Ever grateful for her guidance and love are her children and their spouses, grandkids and great grandson.
