Norman Lynn Vanden Hoek, age 71 of Plankinton, SD died Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at his home under hospice care. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, September 26, 2015 at First Reformed Church, Mitchell, SD with burial at 2:00 PM Saturday at the Harrison Cemetery, Harrison, SD. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Norman L. Vanden Hoek, son of Benjamin and Margaret (Beukelman) Vanden Hoek, was born December 28, 1943 on the family farm in rural Corsica, SD. He grew up and attended country school and completed his schooling in Corsica. After his schooling, Norm helped on the family farm for a time. He began working at the IGA Grocery Store in Corsica and later at Oliver's Cold Storage. Norm was united in marriage with Arlene Rus on December 23, 1964 in Corsica, SD. The couple made their home in Corsica. They later moved to Armour where Norm was employed at Krull's IGA and then moved to White Lake, SD where they farmed. The couple moved to Mitchell and Norm worked for Pheasants Locker. In 1973 they made their home in Plankinton, SD. Norm was employed with the State Training School for 27 years. In his retirement he drove truck for area farmers. He was a member of First Reformed Church in Mitchell, SD. Norm enjoyed camping and having coffee with his friends. He especially enjoyed fishing, but loved spending time with his family and friends. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 50 years, Arlene Vanden Hoek, Plankinton, SD; five children, Kathy (Dan) Schoellerman, Alcester, SD, Dan (Bobbi) Vanden Hoek, Alcester, SD, Ben Vanden Hoek and special friend Laurie, Mitchell, SD, Jody (Brad) Kehn, Plankinton, SD, Heather (Dave) Artz, Valley Springs, SD; 10 grandchildren, Sara Schoellerman, North Sioux City, SD, Alysa Schoellerman and her fiance David, Mitchell, SD, Ty Schoellerman, Alcester, SD, Brandi Vanden Hoek, Alcester, SD, Seth Vanden Hoek, Mitchell, SD, Teaya Vanden Hoek, Mitchell, SD, Janesa "JJ" Vanden Hoek, Mitchell,SD, Skyler Kehn, Plankinton, SD, Jena Kehn, Plankinton, SD, Dylan Artz, Valley Springs, SD; six great grandchildren, Jordan, Maliyah, Kiersten, Varla, Kaden, and Landyn; a sister, Jean (Wesley) DeHaai, Mitchell, SD; a brother, Bill (Wilma) Vanden Hoek, Corsica, SD; his mother-in-law, Hattie Rus, Corsica, SD; four brothers-in-law, Henry (Marcia) Rus, Corsica, SD, Lerry Rus, Stickney, SD, Jack Rus and special friend Cheryl, Corsica, SD, Arnie (Wanda) Rus, Chamberlain, SD; a sister-in-law, Shirley Van Voort and special friend Arlyn, Rock Valley, IA; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a niece, Marlene Vanden Hoek; a nephew, Jeremy Rus; his father-in-law, John L. Rus; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Marlin Johnson; and a brother-in-law, John Van Voorst. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Avera Hospice or to the donor's choice.
