Norman Gerlach, age 78, of Mitchell, died Saturday March 7, 2009 at his home under Hospice Care. Burial will be at 9:00 AM Wednesday at Servicemans Memorial Cemetery prior to the funeral service and the public is invited with military rites. Funeral services then will at 10:30 AM Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.
Norman was born June 17, 1930, in rural Corsica to Gottlieb and Anna (Titze) Gerlach. He grew up on different farms and attended several country schools. He started high school in Mitchell, than farmed for a brief time.
Norman enlisted in the Navy on April 30, 1951, serving on the USS Pittsburgh during the Korean Conflict.
On September 14, 1952, he married Doris Storm, at Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston. After his discharge from the Navy in 1955, he worked for Wudel Heating & Plumbing, Parkston and then moved to Mitchell and worked for Tessiers Sheet Metal. The family moved to Lynnwood, WA where he was employed by Haskel Heating & Plumbing for several years before returning to make Mitchell their permanent home. Norman was employed at Tessiers Sheet Metal for 37 years, until his retirement.
Norman was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on various committees and as President of the congregation. His favorite past times were his family, hunting, fishing, home renovation projects, woodworking projects and watching the Minnesota Twins games.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Doris; five daughters, Dianne and husband Darrell Carr of Mitchell; Debra and husband Kelly Laughlin of Lake City, FL; Darcy and husband John Fullford of Malawi, Africa; Denise and husband Jim Hymans of Des Moines, IA and Dawn and husband Mike Horter of Richland Center, WI; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; one brother Gerald Gerlach of Gillette, WY, two sisters Marlys Pemrick of Mitchell and Ruth Moller of Ames, IA and a sister-in-law Ruth Gerlach of Lynnwood, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Harvey and a sister Irene Blunt.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are gifted to Avera Hospice Care.
