Norma Jean Black, age 89, formerly of Mitchell, passed away on January 15, 2014 at Kennybrook Village in Grimes, IA with her family by her side. Memorial services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, with burial at 9:30 AM Wednesday at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. Norma Tastad, daughter of Ruby and Elmer Tastad, was born June 28, 1924 in Mitchell, SD. She graduated from Plano High School and received a teaching certificate from Dakota Wesleyan University. She was united in marriage with Lyle Black on May 25, 1947. The couple made their home in Mitchell and had two children, Eric and Marcia. Norma's joy was being a wife, mother and homemaker. She was devoted to her family and children and provided loving care to her son Eric who had muscular dystrophy. In 1999, Norma and Lyle moved to Urbandale, IA to be closer to their daughter and her family. Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Lyle; her daughter, Marcia (Jim) Clary, Urbandale, IA; her grandchildren, Steven Clary, West Des Moines, IA and Kristin (Nick) Meyer, Urbandale, IA; her great grandchildren, Madilyn and Logan Meyer; her brothers, Donald (Georgianne) Tastad, Augusta, WI and Wesley (Patti) Tastad, Eminence, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son Eric. Memorials may be directed to the Endowment Fund at First Lutheran Church.
