Norbert Pete Jarding, age 89 of Alexandria, died Friday January 12, 2007 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria, SD with burial at the church cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held for 6 to 8 PM Monday at the church with a 7 PM scripture service and rosary. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel. Pete was born March 8, 1917, on a farm near Alexandria, SD, to John and Philomena (Michels) Jarding. He graduated from Alexandria High School in 1935. During World War II he trained with the Army as an automotive mechanic and went on to graduate from the Army Air Corps. as a bombardier navigator. He was then selected to train bombardiers and their bomber pilots. As a second lieutenant he trained and served as a flight engineer until his discharge in Oct. 1945. Pete married Mildred Ann Duncan on June 4, 1942, in Mitchell, SD. They lived in Alexandria where he pursued his love for farming and raising cattle until the spring of 2006. He then moved to Avera Brady Assisted Living in August 2006 until his death. Pete was a member of St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church. He had a special love for the church and church cemetery, especially the grotto. He was also a member of the American Legion. Pete was survived by his daughter, Kay Wenande of Brookings, and son Jim Jarding and wife JoNell, of Sioux Falls, SD.; six grandchildren, Jim (Megan) Jarding Jr. of Sioux Falls, SD; Brad (Nancy) Wenande of Yankton, SD, Monica (Brian) Cooper of Brookings, SD, Cindy (Eric) Eliason of Chaska, MN, Julie (Dale) Norton of Sioux Falls, SD, and Jennifer Jarding and fianc Michael Hight, of Sioux Falls; and eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Milly, his parents, and five brothers and four sisters.
