Ned Newton Roderick, 96, of Fort Collins, Colorado, formally of Letcher, SD, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, February 26 at First Lutheran Church in Artesian, SD with burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.
Ned was born November 14, 1914 in Artesian, SD to Oliver and Margaret (Buckstead) Roderick. He married Helen Fern Kirch in Mitchell, SD on June 1, 1938. Ned enjoyed his family, farming, cars, motorcycles, races, hunting, flying, traveling, and the special companionship of his cats.
Ned and Helen farmed by the James River near Letcher, SD until the fall of 1941 when they moved to Wichita KS. During their time in Wichita, Ned and Helen had two sons, Leonard and Edward. Ned worked at Boeing as a plane engine mechanic until the end of WW2 in the fall of 1945. Afterwards, he worked at Al Bienz auto garage until the summer of 1949 when Ned and Helen moved to Rapid City, SD. In 1957, Ned started up his own garage and sports car dealership, which they owned and operated until Dec. 1967. At that time, Ned and Helen moved to Crystal Lake, IL to be near their eldest son Leonard, who was critically injured while serving in Vietnam. Upon his recovery, in Dec. of 1969, Ned and Helen then moved to Colorado Springs, CO where they resided for nearly 27 years. In September of 1996, they moved to Fort Collins, CO to be closer to family. Ned and Helen attended and became members of the First Bible Baptist Church and met many new friends.
Ned is survived by a son, Leonard Roderick and wife Shirley, granddaughter Jenniffer (Josh) Tancrede, great-grandchildren Toni and Kaleb Roderick, all of Aurora, CO; a son, Edward Roderick and wife Janet, of LaPorte, CO; granddaughter Rhonda (Tim) Gadeken, great-grandchildren Joshua, Kellie, Matthew, Aaron, and Lucas Gadeken, all of Windsor, CO; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ned was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Margaret Roderick; sisters Edith Roderick and Ruby Sibson; brother Luther Roderick; and his loving, devoted wife of 60 years, Helen Roderick.
