Mildred "Millie" P. Wenande, age 83, of Alexandria, SD died Monday, March 17, 2014 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Saturday, March 22, 2014 at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church, Alexandria, SD with burial at St. Mary of Mercy Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, March 21, 2014 at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church, Alexandria, SD with a rosary followed by a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM. Millie was born September 10, 1930 in Alexandria, SD to Fred & Margaret (Hoeltzner) Huber. She attended grade school at Wayne #3 Country School and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1948. After graduating, Millie worked for a short time for Hanson County Telephone as a switchboard operator. On August 18, 1953 Millie married James P. Wenande, they owned and operated a dairy farm for 40 years. Millie enjoyed being a house wife and home maker while raising their three sons. In 1976, Millie started working for the Alexandria Herald. Over her 28 ½ year career with the Herald, Millie worked in all aspects of the business in preparing the weekly paper and worked for four different editors. She retired from the Herald as the Managing Editor on April 15, 2005. She was a member of the St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Sacred Heart League and the American Legion Auxiliary. Millie enjoyed doing ceramics, scrapbooking, crocheting, and painting. She was an artist and a perfectionist which was displayed in all of her work. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved watching her grandchildren participate in activities and was always listening to the radio if she could not attend their events. Gathering her entire family together during the holidays was a priority for Millie, as she always prepared the most wonderful meals. Her next love was her cats and dogs. She always had a soft spot in her heart for cats and her last dog "Butch" was her solid companion until he joined the monastery. Grateful for sharing her life is her son Michael (June) Wenande of Mitchell, their children: Jena Wenande, Sioux Falls, Joshua Wenande, Lincoln, NE, and Nicholas (Laura) Wenande, St. Louis, MO. A son Donald (Pam) Wenande of Alexandria, their children: Tiffani (Shawn) Kirkpatrick, Aurora, CO, Tony (Amanda) Wenande, Alexandria, and Christina (Ben) Terveen, Sioux Falls. A son Timothy (Pat) Wenande of Alexandria, their children: Craig (Andrea) Wenande, Sioux Center, IA, Jill (Travis) Steilen, Sioux Falls, Neil Wenande, Cole Wenande, Kelli Wenande, and Aaron Wenande, Alexandria; three great grandchildren, Jaycee Heezen of Alexandria and Fuller Kirkpatrick and Landon Kirkpatrick of Aurora, CO; 2 sister-in-laws Fern Huber of Alexandria and Katherine Huber of Mitchell and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents, 5 brothers - Eddie, Larry, Robert, Ray, & Donnie Huber, her sister Helen Wenande, 3 sister-in-laws, and 1 brother-in-law.
