Obituary

Mildred Marie Hills was born on December 20, 1928 at Chamberlain, SD to Charles and Christina (Schmidt) Giedd. She grew up and attended school in Chamberlain and graduated from High School in 1946.

On August 16, 1947 she married Carroll Loran Hills in Oacoma, SD. They moved to Spearfish, SD and was a telephone operator until Loran graduated from Black Hills Teachers College in 1950. They moved to Sundance, WY for a year. In 1951, they returned to Chamberlain, SD and started a family. In 1955, they moved to Mitchell, SD where Loran taught at Mitchell High School. In 1957, they moved to Palo Alto, CA so Loran could pursue his Masters Degree. Upon graduation, they spent one summer in Seattle, WA. The family then moved back to Mitchell, SD in the fall of 1958. Over the next few years they summered in Brooking, SD while Loran pursued his Doctoral Degree then finally settled permanently in Mitchell.

Millie was a devoted mother and wife, raising their 3 children while supporting her husbands educational pursuits. She did so until their youngest was in school. Millie then took a job at the Hallmark Shop, where she worked for over 10 years retiring in 1976.

She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ and the Mitchell Senior Citizens Center.

Millie was an avid bridge player, loved to read and do crossword puzzles, enjoyed flowers, gardening, was an excellent cook and baker and loved animals.

Grateful for sharing her life are husband Loran of Mitchell; sons Brad Hills and wife Marilyn of Crooks, SD, Curt Hills and wife Judine of Rochester, MN, daughter Kelly Hills and friend Bill Schnider of Chester, SD; eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; granddogs Doolittle and Becca and best feline friend Missy.

Preceded in death by her parents, brothers Wilbert, Omar and James and their spouses, sister-in-law Bernadine; sisters Maxine Wilcox and Marge Ropp and their spouses.
