Michael Dean Hasek, age 53, of Mt. Vernon, SD died Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Memorial services will be 1:00 PM Monday, October 20, 2014 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Will Funeral Chapel. Mike Dean Hasek, son of Harry and Anna (Varilek) Hasek, was born March 4, 1961 in Pierre, SD. He grew up in Pierre and graduated in 1979 from Riggs High School, Pierre, SD. Mike then graduated from Watertown VoTech in 1980. After graduating from VoTech, Mike returned to the Pierre area doing carpentry work with his dad. Some of his fondest memories were when he was on the road with his dad. Mike went on to work in Minneapolis, Sioux Falls, Huron, Woonsocket and currently for Mueller Lumber in Mitchell where he not only had fellow employees but also made some good friends. Mike was the person family and many friends went to when they had a project they needed help with. He was known to many as "Big Mike" not only for his height but also his big heart. He liked being a carpenter and took great pride in his work. Mike was a sports fan, keeping up with DWU and many of the schools. He was an avid Packers fan and also liked watching NASCAR and hearing about the local races. Mike started fishing at an early age with his dad and continued throughout his life with family and friends. Mike loved spending time with his family and liked pulling an occasional joke on them. He liked working with his son Aaron on different auto problems and teaching him a few things about carpentry. One of his favorite things to do with his daughter Ashley was target practicing (which she always won). He was also very excited and looking forward to his unborn granddaughter, Gracie's arrival in December. Mike met his best friend Cindy (his angel) eight years ago. They started their life together a year later, spending all of their free time together cutting trees down, working in the yard, gardening, fishing, going for drives and having long talks. He will be greatly missed! Grateful for having shared his life are his special friend, Cindy Aasby; his son, Aaron Hasek, Pierre, SD; his daughter Ashley (Richard) Hasek, Foreston MN; his parents, Harry and Anna Hasek, Pierre, SD; three sisters, Nadine (Jeff) Amy, Elgin, IL, Paula (David) Smith, Pierre, SD, Karen Hasek, Pierre, SD. He is also survived by nieces, Kristin (Richard) Frese, Kara Amy, Jessica (David) Little; a nephew, Jared Smith; a great nephew, Brandon Frese; a great niece, Savannah Frese; his step children, Ashley (Mike) Oyen, Lucas Holforty; and step granddaughter, Lydia Oyen. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Mike's name.
