Mercedes Lyon, 96 of Mitchell, died Thursday July 23, 2009 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday, July 27, 2009 at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Sunday at the Will Funeral Chapel with prayer service beginning at 6:00 PM.

Mercedes was born on November 28, 1912 to William and Mary (Kruetzfeldt) Heckenlaible in Virgil, SD. She attended Virgil Public School where she graduated in 1930. Following graduation she attended Nettleton Commercial College and was then employed by the Travelers Insurance Company.

Mercedes married Karle Cy Lyon on April 17, 1936 in Huron, SD where the couple made their home. They moved to Mitchell in 1956 where they enjoyed ballroom dancing at the Elks Club and playing bridge. Mercedes was an excellent bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs. She was also a Twins fan. She was activities director at Meadowlawn Plaza for several years.
Mercedes is survived by one daughter Judy (Marvin) Jira of Plankinton, SD, one son Tom (Janell) Lyon of Woodbury, MN; 5 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
