Melvin F. Herman age 91, of Mitchell died Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will for one hour prior to the services at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Servicemen's Memorial Cemetery with military rites. Melvin was born on July 4, 1923, in Menno, South Dakota to Ben and Helen Herman. He grew up and graduated from high school in the community in which he was born. He entered the U.S. Navy on March 19, 1943 where he served as a Radarman. He later went on to work as an auto mechanic, small business owner, carpenter, and then farmed until retirement. Melvin married Isabella McNary on December 24, 1948. They lived in Menno, South Dakota, San Pueblo, California, and Mitchell where they raised two children. He took pleasure in gardening, dancing, travel, and spending time with family, friends, and his cat Andy. Melvin leaves behind two daughters, Susan Hehn and her husband Darold Hehn of Rapid City, SD, and Sally Bruce and her husband Steven Bruce of Gillette, Wy, four grandchildren, Jessica Jockisch (Hehn) and her husband Thad Jockisch, Joshua Hehn and his wife Mary Jo, Scott Bruce and Spencer Bruce. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Isabella, his parents, Ben and Helen Herman, and infant sister, brothers, Roy Herman and Vernon Herman. Melvin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all. He will be missed by his family and friends.
